Vidhana Soudha

Ambedkar Veedhi, Central Bengaluru

Time needed
20–30 minutes (exterior viewing)
Distance
3 km away
Entry
Free to view from outside; interior needs prior written permission
Best time
Evening after 6:30pm for the lit-up facade

Completed in 1956, Vidhana Soudha houses the state legislature and secretariat, and its scale is best appreciated from across the road rather than up close — the building is 700 feet long and built almost entirely from Karnataka granite and Magadi pink stone, without imported material, a deliberate post-independence statement.

The interior, including the ornate Cabinet Hall, is open only with permission arranged in advance through a local MLA or the Secretariat, which most visitors never bother with. The floodlighting on Sunday evenings and around Republic Day is the actual draw for most people, and it's genuinely worth timing a visit around.

Highlights

  • Neo-Dravidian granite facade, 700 feet long
  • Sunday evening floodlighting, roughly 6:30pm to 8:30pm
  • The state emblem and 'Government Work Is God's Work' inscription over the entrance
  • High Court building directly opposite for a matching photo

Good to know

  • Interior visits need advance written permission — don't show up expecting a walk-in tour
  • Best photo spot is the pedestrian island across the road on Dr Ambedkar Veedhi
  • Traffic police discourage stopping vehicles directly in front — park near Cubbon Park and walk over
