Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace

Chamrajpet, Bengaluru

Time needed
45 minutes – 1 hour
Distance
6 km away
Entry
₹15 for Indians, ₹200 for foreign nationals
Best time
Any time, avoid peak afternoon heat

This is the smaller, older sibling to the more famous summer palace in Srirangapatna. Built almost entirely of teak with floral frescoes on the ceilings, it sits inside what remains of the mud-and-stone Bengaluru Fort that Kempe Gowda originally built and Hyder Ali later fortified. Most of the fort itself is gone, swallowed by the market around it.

The upper floor has better light for the surviving paintwork, though restoration over the decades has been uneven. It's a quick stop rather than a destination on its own — pair it with Bull Temple or the KR Market crawl since they're a short auto ride apart.

Highlights

  • Teak pillars and carved balconies, no metal used in construction
  • Faded floral ceiling frescoes on the upper floor
  • Remnants of the old Bengaluru Fort walls nearby
  • A small ASI museum with Tipu-era coins and weapons

Good to know

  • Combine with Bull Temple and KR Market in one auto trip — all three are within 15 minutes of each other
  • Skip the audio guide, there isn't one; a 20-minute self-walk covers it
  • Ventilation inside is poor in peak summer afternoons — go before noon
