Ooty was the Madras Presidency's summer capital under the British, and that history is still visible in the Botanical Garden's layout, the churches, and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway — the UNESCO-listed toy train that climbs from Mettupalayam through 16 tunnels and over 250 bridges, a genuinely worthwhile half-day in itself if you book ahead.
Ooty Lake and the botanical gardens draw the heaviest crowds, especially over the April-May summer holiday season when the town's population effectively multiplies. Doddabetta Peak, the highest point in the Nilgiris, and the tea estates on the drive out toward Coonoor are quieter and arguably more worthwhile than the town centre itself.
Highlights

Good to know
- Book toy train tickets well in advance online — seats sell out days ahead in peak season
- April–May school holidays bring serious crowds and traffic jams into town — shoulder months are far more pleasant
- Coonoor, a short drive away, has similar tea-country views with a fraction of Ooty's crowds
