Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire until it was sacked in 1565, and what remains — the Virupaksha Temple, the Vittala Temple's stone chariot and musical pillars, the Lotus Mahal, and dozens of smaller ruins — is spread across several kilometres of boulder-strewn landscape that itself feels otherworldly. A coracle ride across the Tungabhadra to the Anegundi side adds a slower, quieter half-day.

The distances between monument clusters mean you need a rented scooter or a full-day auto rather than trying to walk it, especially in the heat. Sunrise or sunset at Matanga Hill, overlooking the whole ruin field, is worth building the day around rather than treating as an afterthought.

Highlights

  • Virupaksha Temple, still an active place of worship
  • Vittala Temple's stone chariot and musical pillars
  • Coracle ride across the Tungabhadra to Anegundi
  • Sunset from Matanga Hill over the ruin field

Good to know

  • Rent a scooter for two days rather than relying on autos — the sites are spread far apart
  • Summer afternoons (April–June) are brutally hot with little shade among the ruins — stick to early morning and late afternoon
  • Cross to the Anegundi side for a quieter, less touristy half day away from the main ruin crowds
