Cubbon Park was laid out in 1870 by Major General Richard Sankey and now sits right in the middle of the city's government and business district, which is precisely what makes it useful — you can walk from a meeting on MG Road into forest cover in ten minutes. The park is closed to motor vehicles on Sundays, when joggers, cyclists and families take over the internal roads.
The State Central Library, Bal Bhavan and the small Cubbon Park metro station sit inside its boundary, along with a toy train that still runs on weekends. Rain trees and gulmohars planted more than a century ago form a canopy thick enough that the temperature genuinely drops a couple of degrees once you're under it.
Highlights
- Car-free Sunday mornings, 6am to 5pm
- State Central Library's red Gothic-style building
- Heritage rain trees and gulmohar avenues
- Toy train for kids on weekends
Good to know
- Enter from the Queens Road side for the quietest, most tree-covered stretch
- Cubbon Park metro station (Purple Line) opens directly into the park — skip the parking hassle
- Sunday cycling groups start around 6:30am; if you just want a quiet walk, come after 8am once they've dispersed
